Cadiz Carnival

Chirigotas and celebrations in the city of Cadiz

The locals of Cadiz often talk of the Greek God Momo, who was banished from Olympus and sent to live with mortals for his irritating sarcasm towards the other Greek gods. Inhabitants say Momo came to live in Cadiz. With his sharp humour and dry sarcasm he taught Cadiz’s inhabitants how to laugh at themselves and at the many things that oppressed them. From his teachings, the Cadiz Carnival was born.

Every year, in the second half of February the Carnival descends on Cadiz. The city experiences 14 days of singing, drinking, dancing and general revelry during which time there is an overwhelming sense of happiness and unity in the city.

The Carnival is most famous for the singing competitions that occur throughout the city streets, the most revered being the official competition which takes place in the Teatro Falla. Many of the singing groups practice throughout the year for this one event and songs are practiced to near perfection. Performances centre around current affairs, scathing criticisms of political figures, parties and their decisions and tongue-in-cheek mockeries of celebrities and famous individuals.
