Cadiz Province
Useful information about Cadiz Province
When one imagines Andalucia, certain images are conjured up. Stunning beaches, cork tree forests, majestic sierras, enviable amounts of sunshine… the province of Cadiz offers them all. Historically, the Phoenicians were the first colonizers from an
identifiable civilization to inhabit this area around 1000BC. Henceforth, due to its strategic importance as the gateway to the Mediterranean, Cadiz has been fought over by such great empires as the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Moors, all of whom have left their mark on this unique province. Traces of their influence can be found at the Roman ruins in Bolonia or in the breathtaking moorish white villages. The Battle of Trafalgar was fought just off this rugged coastline a little over 200 years ago.
Cadiz is most renowned for three things: Flamenco, Sherry, and Horses. Three very diverse traditions, each with a wealth of history and culture which when combined, create renowned annual festivals called "ferias". The “coast of light” also boasts many kilometres of wild, untamed beaches, some of the last to be found in Spain.
However the Province has even more to offer… be you a keen ornithologist or an extreme kitesurfer, an aspiring golfer or a total wine buff, there is something for everyone. It is the diversity of the province which makes it so enticing to the outsider. The wealth of activities on offer ensure an unforgettable holiday.
