Flamenco
Jerez, the birthplace of Flamenco
Flamenco culture lies at the heart of everything Andalucian, bursting with vibrant colours, passionate dancing and the melodies and rhythms of the guitar. The "palming" is only too distinctive of its native Andalucian, Moorish and Gitano roots. The mysterious and romantic nature of the music along with the intricate dance has fuelled an enormous growth in popularity throughout Spain, but its spirit remains firmly in Andalucia.
As the cultural capital of Flamenco, Jerez is home to the Andalucian Centre of Flamenco and offers a wealth of shows and performances throughout the year. The annual highlight is the Flamenco Festival in Jerez at the end of February and into early March. This is when some of the finest Flamenco dancers, singers and guitarists in the country descend on the city along with many thousands of followers for a fortnight of spectacular performances. These sell out well before the event, so plan ahead for this spectacular event. One thing is certain, no visitor to the area should miss a performance of this wonderful spectacle. ¡Olé!
