Horses

Various equestrian activities in Cadiz Province

The distinguished Andalucian breed of horse is among the oldest in the world and is renowned as one of the most majestic and intelligent breeds today. Having been used throughout its history for cavalry, bull fighting, parades and more recently excelling in competitive dressage events, it is most commonly grey in colour, with a strong, compact build and a prancing, elegant stride. The Andalucian has been the breed of choice for key roles in films such as Shadowfax in The Lord of the Rings as well as in The Mask of Zorro. It remains a proud symbol of the province, to such an extent that Jerez celebrates a Festival which embodies the splendour of this wonderful creature at the Feria del Caballo in early May.

The breed's exceptional ability to learn and perform complicated manoeuvres is displayed in all its magnificence in the weekly show at the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez where the horses quite literally dance!

Given the enormous popularity of horses in the region, there are a number of riding schools catering for all levels where you can experience the thrill of riding along the Costa de la Luz's golden sandy beaches or through the stunning pine forested hills. If you are a fan of horse racing then do not miss the horse races along the beaches of Sanlucar de Barrameda, an annual spectacle in August of international acclaim, dating back to 1845. Large crowds gather to watch the horses thunder past, place bets and revel in the festivities.
